Athlete Spotlight: Shane Wilson

Shane is the joker of the gym, a man of many talents who actually designed the Instinct Fitness logo! His strength is very impressive and he could probably run a marathon on his hands.
He’s also been with Instinct Fitness for over 3 years going right back to when we ran boot camps in local parks.
Name: Shane Lionel Wilson
Age: Advanced
Occupation: Graphic Designer & Marketing Coordinator
Nickname: Don’t really have one. But I have come to realise there is a name people call me once we become good friends – Ill let you figure out for yourselves.
Your go to Party Trick: I’ve been known to drink the odd beer whilst holding a handstand.
How long have you been at Instinct Fitness: Since the beginning baby!
What do you enjoy doing outside of CrossFit: I really love a good craft beer (the darker the better). Also like hanging out at the beach and one of my favourite places to be is on a coastal tramp/dive trip around the Southern coastline of Wellington between Island Bay and Makara.
What is your favourite movement in CrossFit: Probably anything with a gymnastic element in it – handstand walks, pull ups. Also love a good power clean.
What is your most hated movement in CrossFit: Hate is a strong word but I have recognised my weakness when it comes to wall balls so I bought myself a 10kg ball for home and have been practicing with Karen. The neighbours who can see into our backyard often point and laugh but i don’t care.
What are your biggest achievements so far: Entering my first solo crossfit comp last year was a highlight as far as fitness achievements go. Managed a first placing and have been clinging to that vain glory ever since!
What are your future goals: Within the gym I want to continue working on all my weaknesses and build strength. I also aim to complete some coaching training in the next year and a half to enable my love of fitness to become a career as well as a passion.
Any advice for anyone just starting their CrossFit journey: Enjoy the fact that every session is different and just when you think you are mastering this old Crossfit game a workout comes along that will absolutely kicks your arse. Don’t beat yourself up everytime a work out doesn’t go to plan. Learn to compete against yourself first and foremost and embrace the awesome community that this gym/s has created. Master that basics and techniques before progressing to heavy weights. It’ll be well worth it in the long run.
Tell us something we don’t know about you: I designed the logo and branding for Instinct Fitness, I did competitive gymnastics until the age of 15 and I love a good costume party.
